50 BIG BUSINESS IDEAS AND HOW TO ACTION THEM

The DO IT! List: 50 Big Business Ideas and How to Action Them, UGM's new book, was released on 1st December.

Our clients regularly tell us how much they look forward to our briefing each week and that they somehow always seem to address the right topics at just the right time! In fact, we're thrilled that so many of our subscribers who don't find time to read much else look forward to and make time for our briefing each Friday. Thanks to repeated requests for the best briefings to be made available in an easily accessible book format, the idea for The DO IT! List was born.

The DO IT! List follows the same successful format as the briefings. We focus on a topic, highlight a couple of key issues and then provide you with a list of topics on how to action the ideas. We've come to call this list your DO IT! List, the main title of the book.

We've divided The DO IT! List into seven topic areas that our clients frequently use to make sense of their business challenges. These areas will help you quickly access the topics that most directly interest you. They are:

  1. Better Strategy
  2. Leading and Managing
  3. Change Perspectives
  4. Cultural Competence
  5. Diversity and Inclusion
  6. Influencing Behaviours
  7. Personal Performance

While you may initially think about challenges in these broad 'disciplinary' areas, most often your actual concerns probably relate to the anticipated deliverables. But recent research confirms what many of us already know – focusing only on performance metrics does not maximise output. Therefore, many topic areas relate to organisational health, since this is the platform for generating and sustaining performance. Our experience is that a certain richness of thinking flows from using the organisational performance-organisational health lens to view the disciplinary areas.

Here are four ways people will get value from the book:

  1. Some people will like to work systematically through the book, chapter by chapter. This usually means taking just one chapter a week, spending some time digesting its core idea, then implementing the practical advice, before moving on to the next chapter.
  2. Quite a number of our readers might prefer to glance down the Contents Page in order to find specific support for a current challenge they are facing. In fact, we often use the chapters this way ourselves with clients working with us in a Business Mentoring relationship.
  3. We have clients who have said they'll use the book as a weekly conversation starter at a 'brown bag lunch' for their team. Everyone listens to a summary of the main idea. Then it's discussed and team members decide how they will apply the tips and advice over the coming week. Team members take it in turns to lead this once-a-week, lunchtime talk. This can be a great way to promote a sense of connection and alignment in your team, especially when there are budget constraints limiting your spend on professional development.
  4. Each chapter also makes a practical contribution to any professional development program you may be running in your organisation. Program participants can use the book as a background text, to help focus their thinking and stimulate rewarding conversations about leadership and management today.
